Sustainable packaging at Boomba Bamboo

How we think about packaging — what we use, what we've changed, and the trade-offs of going greener.

Selling bamboo bedding because it's sustainable but shipping it in plastic? That's a contradiction we've worked hard to solve. Sustainable packaging is one of those topics where intentions are easy and execution is much harder — there are real trade-offs between cost, durability, recyclability, and protection of the product. Here's how we think about it, what we've changed, and where we're still working.

  1. Why packaging matters as much as product
  2. What we currently use
  3. The honest trade-offs
  4. What we deliberately avoid
  5. What you can do

Why packaging matters as much as product

It would be hypocritical to sell organic bamboo bedding in single-use plastic. Customers who choose sustainable products notice — and rightly expect — that the choice extends to how the product arrives at their door. Beyond optics, packaging is genuinely one of the larger environmental costs of e-commerce. The production, the shipping volume, the disposal — it all adds up.

What we currently use

  • Recycled cardboard boxes — made from post-consumer waste, fully recyclable
  • Paper-based filling instead of plastic bubble wrap or air pillows where possible
  • Recyclable inner wrapping for the bedding itself — keeps the product clean during transit
  • Plant-based or paper tape rather than plastic packing tape
  • No plastic mailers — boxes only

The honest trade-offs

Sustainable packaging isn't always free of compromises. Some of the choices we've made:

  • Slightly more expensive packaging — eco-options often cost more than plastic. We absorb most of this cost rather than passing it on.
  • Slightly larger boxes — paper-based protection takes up more volume than plastic alternatives. Means more shipping volume but less plastic waste.
  • Imperfect recyclability — some adhesives and coatings limit how easily packaging can be recycled. We're still working on improvements.
  • Inner protection still uses some plastic in moist or cold seasons to ensure bedding arrives clean and dry — we're testing alternatives

We don't claim our packaging is perfect. We claim it's significantly better than the e-commerce default — and we're still working to improve it.

What we deliberately avoid

  • Plastic mailing bags (despite being cheaper and lighter)
  • Single-use plastic air pillows or bubble wrap
  • Excessive branding on packaging — keeps it simpler and more recyclable
  • Premium presentation boxes that are visually impressive but environmentally costly
  • Free returns shipping in disposable packaging — we encourage reuse of the original box

What you can do

  • Reuse the box for storage, moving, or your own shipping needs
  • Recycle the cardboard and paper — both are widely accepted in most recycling streams
  • Compost the paper-based protective filling if your local programme accepts it
  • Tell us if you spot something that could be more sustainable. Customer feedback drives most of our improvements.

Sustainable bedding deserves sustainable packaging. The work is ongoing, but the direction is clear. Read more about our approach on our about page.
