How to maintain a Boomba Bamboo duvet

Practical, year-round care for your bamboo duvet — washing, airing, storing — so it lasts as long as it should.

A well-cared-for bamboo duvet lasts 5–7 years and performs nearly as well in year five as in year one. A neglected one can be tired and clumpy in 18 months. The difference isn't expensive — it's just a few habits done consistently. Here's the maintenance routine that keeps a bamboo duvet at its best across all seasons.

  1. Daily: 60 seconds of care
  2. Weekly: deeper attention
  3. Seasonal: the proper wash
  4. Storing the off-season duvet
  5. What NOT to do

Daily: 60 seconds of care

The simplest, most effective habit. Every morning when you get up:

  • Don't immediately make the bed — let it air for 15–20 minutes
  • Throw back the duvet completely so air gets to both sides
  • Open the curtains, ideally a window if you can

This simple routine releases overnight moisture (your body sweats around half a litre per night) before it can settle into the fill. Sixty seconds, and the duvet stays fresh longer.

Weekly: deeper attention

Once a week:

  • Vigorous shake — hold by the corners, shake for 20 seconds outside or in front of an open window. Redistributes the fill, prevents flat spots.
  • Inspect the cover — make sure no fill is escaping (rare with quality bamboo, but worth checking)
  • Air for at least an hour — outside on a dry day, or somewhere airy indoors

Seasonal: the proper wash

Wash the duvet itself (not just the cover) every 3–6 months. Most people overlook this, but the duvet inside collects oils, skin cells, and dust mites just like the cover does — just slower.

The right way:

  • 30°C, gentle cycle — bamboo fibres don't need hot water and prefer it cool
  • Mild liquid detergent — skip the bleach, skip the fabric softener (it coats fibres and reduces breathability)
  • Extra rinse — to make sure all detergent is washed out
  • Dry thoroughly — tumble dry on low with clean tennis balls (in socks) to maintain loft, OR hang on a flat outdoor rack on a dry day
  • Make sure it's bone dry before storing or using — damp duvets develop musty smells and lose loft permanently

If the duvet won't fit in your machine (typical for double and king sizes), use a launderette with a commercial machine. The cost is small compared to a new duvet.

Storing the off-season duvet

If you switch between summer and winter duvets — see the difference between winter and summer duvets — proper storage extends the life of both.

  • Wash and dry thoroughly before storing
  • Store in a breathable bag, NOT a sealed plastic vacuum bag (bamboo fibres need air circulation)
  • Cool, dry, dark place — under-bed storage works well, attics often don't (humidity and heat)
  • Don't compress heavily — minor folding is fine, vacuum-packing damages the fill

What NOT to do

  • Don't dry clean — the chemicals damage bamboo fibres
  • Don't use bleach or oxygen brighteners
  • Don't use fabric softener — coats fibres and reduces breathability
  • Don't iron — never necessary, and the heat damages the fill structure
  • Don't ignore mild musty smells — they get worse fast
  • Don't store damp — musty fill is hard or impossible to reverse

Done properly, a Boomba Bamboo duvet rewards you with years of consistent comfort. The maintenance routine above takes minimal effort — but it makes a clear difference in how the duvet feels, how long it lasts, and how clean your bed is.
