Bedding size guide: what size do I need?
The complete guide to bedding sizes — UK names alongside exact dimensions in cm, for fitted sheets, duvet covers, and pillowcases.
Bedding sizes are one of those things that look simple until you actually have to choose. Fitted sheets are sized to the mattress, duvet covers to the duvet, pillowcases to the pillow — and a sheet should usually be larger than the mattress, while a fitted sheet has to be exactly right. Add international naming differences (Single, Queen, King, Super King) to the mix and it gets confusing fast. This guide cuts through it: every size you need, with both the UK name and the exact dimensions in cm.
A fitted sheet wraps tightly around your mattress. Match the size to the mattress dimensions exactly — too small and it pops off, too large and it bunches.
Standard depth — fits mattresses up to about 30 cm thick.
| Size (cm) | UK name | Bed type |
|---|---|---|
| 80 x 200 (31 x 79) | Single / Twin | Single bed |
| 90 x 200 (35 x 79) | Single / Twin | Single bed (most common) |
| 100 x 200 (39 x 79) | Single (wide) / Twin | Wide single |
| 120 x 200 (47 x 79) | Small Double | Small double / day bed |
| 140 x 200 (55 x 79) | Double | Double bed |
| 160 x 200 (63 x 79) | Queen | Queen bed |
| 180 x 200 (71 x 79) | King | King-size bed |
| 200 x 200 (79 x 79) | Super King | Super King-size |
Long versions — for mattresses 210 or 220 cm long (typical for taller sleepers).
| Size (cm) | UK name | Bed type |
|---|---|---|
| 80 x 220 (31 x 87) | Single XL / Long Twin | Long single |
| 90 x 220 (35 x 87) | Single XL / Long Twin | Long single |
| 140 x 220 (55 x 87) | Double XL | Long double |
| 160 x 220 (63 x 87) | Queen XL | Long queen |
| 180 x 220 (71 x 87) | King XL | Long king |
A duvet cover should match the size of your duvet, not your mattress. The duvet itself is usually slightly larger than the mattress so it overhangs comfortably.

A flat sheet should be larger than your mattress so it tucks in properly on all sides.
| Size (cm) | UK name | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 180 x 280 (71 x 110) | Single | Single bed |
| 240 x 280 (94 x 110) | Double | Double bed |
| 270 x 290 (106 x 114) | King / Super King | King and larger beds |
Pillowcases are sized to the pillow, not the bed. The standard sizes:
| Size (cm) | UK name | Pillow type |
|---|---|---|
| 50 x 60 (20 x 24) | Standard | Most common pillow size |
| 60 x 70 (24 x 28) | European / Continental | Larger square-ish pillow |
| 40 x 60 (16 x 24) | Children's | Toddler / child pillows |
American beds are measured in inches and named differently, and the sizes are not identical to European ones. A US Queen is 60 x 80 inches, which comes out at roughly 152 x 203 cm — close to, but not the same as, a European 160 x 200. Because a fitted sheet has to fit exactly, the table below shows which of our sizes is the nearest match and whether it runs a little wider or narrower.
| US bed name | US mattress | Nearest Boomba size | Fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twin | 39 x 75 (99 x 191 cm) | 100 x 200 cm | Slightly longer, snug width |
| Twin XL | 39 x 80 (99 x 203 cm) | 100 x 200 cm | Good match |
| Full / Double | 54 x 75 (137 x 191 cm) | 140 x 200 cm | Good match, slightly longer |
| Queen | 60 x 80 (152 x 203 cm) | 160 x 200 cm | Slightly wider, near-identical length |
| King | 76 x 80 (193 x 203 cm) | 180 x 200 cm | Narrower; 200 x 200 if your mattress is deep |
| California King | 72 x 84 (183 x 213 cm) | 180 x 220 cm | Good match |
Two things worth knowing if you are ordering from the United States. What Americans call a comforter is what we call a duvet, and the cover that goes over it is the duvet cover. And where a US comforter is often used without a cover, our duvets are made to sit inside one — which is why the duvet and the cover are sold separately.
All our fitted sheets have deep corners, up to about 35 cm or 14 inches, so they also fit the thicker mattresses and toppers that are common in the US.
If you're still unsure, the safest approach is to measure your mattress, your duvet, and your pillows directly. A tape measure beats a tag every time. Browse the full bamboo bedding range with all sizes available.
